Dim headlights. Dimming headlights are one of the most common signs of a bad alternator in the Volkswagen Golf. Dim headlights indicate that the alternator can’t keep up with the energy request for the lights. As your Golf begins to eat through the voltage stored in the battery, the headlights will begin to fade. This sounds like the tensioner. I've had to do this to 2 TSI's and am 2.0 AEG engine with very similar symptoms. (One identical) As prior post stated. I'd recommend changing chain, tensioner, guides ASAP and do t drive it until you do. While fairly costly, cheaper than $5-$6K for a new engine.
